“I found this book to be very different in feel from most contemporary fantasy I’ve read in the past. From the unique tropical setting to the ancient mythical inspirations dotted throughout, the world feels rich and interesting, with a lot of unique concepts. The story’s setting is definitely it’s strongest point in my opinion, but the characters that interact with that setting are no less interesting. There’s a lot going on, both interpersonally and politically, and I felt the pacing never really left me bored even in the quieter moments – almost every scene and character interaction serves some purpose toward the greater narrative, so you won’t find much fluff here. The characters are generally likeable, and where not, at least believable. Even the villains. There’s not much more I can say without spoiling it, but if you are a fan of past paced but well written prose and exotic locations with mythological undertones based on real-world “historical” locations (think Lemuria, Atlantis, etc) and satisfying character growth arcs, you’ll enjoy this book.”

Are you certain lightning never strikes twice?

I need you to help me escape.

Where Ember Slade goes, destruction follows. She accidentally maimed her sister and murdered her foster parents. Mysterious blackouts result in unexplainable power outages.

For years she’s isolated in Dallas, never allowing herself to get close to anyone, doing whatever it takes to avoid causing harm again. Until she’s stolen away to the hidden Magick Realm, where she learns that she is the last alloy of their world, that these accidents are due to her untapped abilities, and that she was actually born in the island kingdom of Nysa.

In exchange for her allegiance to Nysa, she’ll have the opportunity to learn control over her powers. Desperate for answers about her past, to finally live a life free of death and pain, to return to her sister, Ember takes the deal.

But the Nysan queen craves death. And she wants Ember to be her weapon.

When Ember learns of the queen’s plans to wage a war with another magical kingdom—starting with the sacrifice of her own daughter—Ember can no longer simply learn her powers and then return home.

Tangled within the upcoming battle for power are Ademure, a princess with no way out; Kiva, a charming young man who’s clearly not all that he seems; Sombra and Nieve, strange and powerful twins; Damian, a sweet boy with secrets of his own; and Alden, who finds himself torn between familial duty and friendship—each with different ideas of what is right.

As she struggles to hone her abilities, Ember must escape war and save the princess…all while vowing to do no harm to anyone else.

With magic of Spanish and Greek origins, tantalizing family mysteries, and endearing friendships, this debut spice-free new adult “urban epic” fantasy novel is perfect for readers who enjoy stories of finding your power when the world seems against you.
